We love oracle cards, and while Donna Marie and I can share with you a lot of things about oracle cards, the one thing we can’t tell you is which oracle card deck is right for you.
We can guide you in the right direction, we can offer insights as to which types of decks you might enjoy, but ultimately which deck you choose is up to you.
Types of Oracle Card Decks
To start with, there are an unbelievable number of choices available to you. Oracle card decks come in all different themes, styles, and sizes, so whether you prefer something traditional or something esoteric, or even something light-hearted, there is probably a deck to suit your desires.
Let’s look at some of the differences.
Oracle Card Styles
At the most basic level, oracle cards come in two different styles. There are those based on the traditional tarot deck, and those that are not.
Tarot-based decks – Like traditional tarot card decks, tarot-based oracle card decks are divided into two sections. One section has the ‘suit cards’ – called the minor arcane in tarot. This section would contain cards like the two of cups, the ten of gems, or the king of water, for example. The other section of a tarot-based deck contains the cards that relate to the major arcane in tarot – the world, justice, the fool, etc.
While these types of oracle cards decks are structured similarly to a tarot deck, depending on the creator of the deck, the names of the suits, the names of the major cards, and the meanings of all of the cards are different from a traditional tarot deck.
These types of decks are different from, but still based on, the traditional tarot structure.
Non-tarot based decks – These oracle card decks are not based on the tarot, but rather consist entirely of cards that are independent of each other. There are usually no suits. Each card conveys a separate meaning or message.
The vast majority of oracle card decks fall into this category. This is also where you’ll find the largest variety of themes.
Oracle Card Themes
It’s amazing how many different types of oracle card decks there are. No matter where your interests lie, there is most likely a deck that fits that interest.
There are those that you’d expect, likes decks around angels, or ascended masters, or spirit guides. But there are also decks around love, relationships, money, career, and your spiritual path.
Then you have the decks featuring fairies, mermaids, dragons, elves, and other ‘mythical’ creatures.
Are your interests more down to earth? You’ll also find decks featuring:
- Crystals
- Flowers
- Trees
- Dogs
- Cats
- Fish
- And yes, even zombies. (I own one of those!)
You’ll also find oracle decks from a variety of authors and teachers based on their books or teachings. Donna Marie and I have decks from:

There really is something for everyone when it comes to oracle card decks.
Which Oracle Card Deck is Right for You?
With so many decks to choose from, how do you know which one is right for you? The answer we always give is that the right deck is the deck you are drawn to in that moment.
It doesn’t matter whether you are browsing in a store or shopping online, the one guideline to follow is to trust your heart, to trust your intuitive voice.
There will be some decks you are drawn to and some you are not. Don’t question the reasons why you are attracted or not attracted to a particular deck, just allow yourself to notice the ones that catch your ‘eye’.
Maybe you are attracted to the artwork or the design of the cards. Maybe you are a fan of the author or creator of the deck. Maybe the messages on the cards appeal to you. It doesn’t matter what it is that draws you in. All that matters is that you allow those feelings of attraction to manifest within you.
Following those feelings will always lead you to the choice that is right for you in this moment.
So while it can be overwhelming to try to choose a deck from the thousands that are available, if you let your intuition guide you, you are sure to make the right choice!
